INVISIBLE ARCHITECTURE

A Presentation by ‘Sheltermaker’ Peter Cowman

Model of structure of 2 storey Actual House

Combining unique experience and unparalleled insight this presentation is all about pushing the boundaries of our understanding of what architecture is – and how it impacts our lives both physical as well as emotional. While generally, architecture is presented as being complex it can, in fact, be very simple – literally four walls and a roof. It is life which is complicated and full of hidden meaning. When we accept this fact, and the nature of this invisibility, we can begin to distinguish between the visible and invisible aspects of buildings. This allows us to interpret the abstract nature of inner space as a reflection of our own ‘invisible’, or, inner selves allowing us to regain control of the sheltermaking process, and consequently of our time and space – and of our lives.

THE VENUE: Rock and Bird is a beautiful house situated on the river estuary right beside the sea in Wexford county. It is a sustainable living project that uses solar power/back boiler heating and solar gain through extensive glass windows. We have our reed bed for cleaning water and a well for drinking water. There is a beautiful lake on the land. We have a polytunnel and an organic veg garden. We plant trees each year and we have 16 hens 2 ducks and 5 baby chicks.

In July of this year we begin to build a classroom called “Sanctuary” to host many alternative and holistic workshops as well as it being a local space for the community to attend and host events. Watch this space!
