Balance. Equality. Equilibrium. Equinox.
Whether its spring or autumn where you live, the vibe is pretty much the same – a dynamic balancing act.
Here in Ireland the land is waking up and plants, trees, animals and people are stirring into action also.
I’ve recently returned from a research trip to India, a place that was new to me but was curiously familiar too.
India is the most sustainable society I have ever experienced.
The secret of a truly sustainable society?
Allowing the spiritual to manifest in the everyday.
One encounters the spiritual everywhere – in Rangoli for example which are sacred patterns displayed in front of houses and shops, a reference to the enigmatic patterns within life itself.
Rangoli put sacred geometry to shame by discarding all instruments but the hand and the eye.
Bicycles are in evidence everywhere in India, usually loaded to the gills with ‘stuff’!
Animals have their place and their roles in India too, providing truly ‘green’ transport.
Temples, in terms of the spiritual, dominate not only the skyline but provide a sustainable perspective for the living of day-to-day life in India.
Colour, beauty, togetherness, spirituality, peace … India serves it all up in an alluring mix of the sacred and the profane.
HERE & NOW
Meanwhile, back in lovely Leitrim, the frogs are calling out for mates, the birds are gathering in their nesting materials and the the land is reawakening.
Having given up car ownership a year ago I’m enjoying my electric bike more and more each day.
My solar array is also close to a year old and performing well – much easier to live with compared to the windcharger!
The LAC Studio, with its new cedar cladding, is now up and running and hosting a variety of creative activities, the results of which I will be referring to in forthcoming Sheltermakers.
With The Sheltermaker’s Manual + Worksheets and Online Course and the EconoSpace Course DVD readily available my energies are being freed up to focus on more LIVE Sheltermaking – the design and construction of real buildings for real people in real life.
REAL BUILDINGS FOR REAL PEOPLE IN REAL LIFE
The focus of my teaching activity will now be on assisting those living their architecture in the here and now.
This in its true essence is community activity that goes to the heart of our aliveness, our individuality and our desire to live our lives true to our potential.
Not only is this exciting, it is also deeply creative and exciting.
Several ShelterMaking Projects are currently scheduled to take place over the summer and more will be added to the list and things unfold. Details will appear online and in forthcoming Sheltermakers.
LIVE ECONOSPACEMAKING: OCTAGONAL FORESTRY HUT
This project will take place on a small farm near Belturbet, Co. Cavan, Ireland. It will feature an octagonal EconoSpace constructed from locally sourced timber, milled on-site.
The forestry hut will be constructed alongside an extensive broadleaf plantation under Forestry Exempted Development provisions thereby REQUIRING NO PLANNING PERMISSION!
I will be hosting a series of ShelterMaker MasterClasses on-site, beginning on Saturday/Sunday April 11th & 12th.
It will be possible to attend either or both days of these MasterClasses and to volunteer to be involved in the project as it progresses day-to-day between MasterClasses. There will be accommodation and food available on-site. Supporting material relating to all aspects of the design and construction will be available to those who attend only some of the MasterClasses. MasterClass fees will be kept as low as is practical and will depend on attendances.
If you are serious about natural building design and construction and are serious about living the sort of life that goes hand-in-hand with such buildings then these are opportunities not to be missed.
If you are interested in attending and in receiving further details please register your interest HERE as soon as possible.

I will be leading this ‘activity’ daily at the Earthsong Harvest Moon Camp 18th-26th July 2015
Say goodbye to tame, safe and respectable and say hello to wild, zany, exuberant and outrageous.
Wild Sheltermaking reveals our shadow side, our deep inner nature – it is mirror and revelation.
Wild Sheltermaking is womb, hidey hole, den, safe place, refuge – your place, your self.
Wild Sheltermaking is made using branches, sticks, string, cloth, grass, leaves, dream and imagination.
Wild Sheltermaking embraces, ignites, stimulates, lures, seduces, entices, invites, compels.
So, prepare to draw your line, to embrace your space, to live your wild side!
See you at the Earthsong Harvest Moon Camp 18th-26th July 2015!
