This Festival will be all about doing and being, weaving the various ‘threads’ which connect shelter to the world-at-large into a ‘happening’ which facilitates people in experiencing and sharing their aliveness.

The basic idea will be to engage people in a positive way to the process of sheltermaking and with those aspects of life which connect to it, encouraging awareness, engagement, consciousness, co-operation, creativity, exploration, insight and, of course, fun.

IRISH SELF BUILDERS CALL FOR ACTION

“People of Ireland, Stand Up for Your Right To Build Your Own Home”

On 8th of March 2013, the Minister for Environment, Community and Local government introduced Building Control (Amendment) S.I 80 which was then revoked in January 2014 and replaced by S.I 9 and will commence with effect from 1st of March 2014.

This amendment was brought in with the involvement of several key stakeholders which included Architects, Engineers, Building Surveyors and Construction Industry Federation.

Self Builders under Building Control (Amendment) S.I 9 , 2014

As a self builder, you will not be able to nominate yourself to be the builder after 1st of March 2014 when the new regulations comes into effect. What this means is that should this amendment proceed as it is, as a self builder you will not be able to participate in the construction of your build if you wish to do so. After this date to operate in the role of contractor you will may be deemed to be not in compliance with the building regulations as you do not fulfil the Department’s criteria of a “competent person”: have at least 3 years relevant contracting experience and be the principal of a building firm.

Well there you have it folks! As I have at length stated over the years, ‘property’ is the security for debts created out of thin air by the financial system backed up by pieces of paper signed by overpaid professionals. Removing people’s right to build their own home is just further confirmation of how people’s need for housing is used as the means to push people into debt in order to own a home – in exchange for the promise that their home will continually rise in value!

If you don’t believe me – or understand the inherent weaknesses of this system – scroll down to the BRICKS ‘N MORTAR or the 11 MILLION EMPTY HOMES pieces below!

NOT EVEN CLIMATE CHANGE WILL KILL OFF CAPITALISM!

by Razmig Keucheyan

P11p8Arguably the single most important mistake the revolutionary movements of the 60s and 70s made was to overlook the resilience of capitalism. The idea – catastrophism, as it is often called – that the system was going to crumble under the pressure of its own contradictions, that the bourgeoisie produces its own “gravediggers” (as Marx and Engels put it in the Communist Manifesto) has been disproved. When the rate of profit started showing signs of decline in the first half of the 70s, the redistributive policies implemented after the second world war were terminated and the neoliberal revolution was launched.

Greece has suffered the second biggest property crash in the EU since the debt crisis began – after Croatia!

In a market that has hit rock bottom in the maelstrom of Greece’s financial meltdown, basement flats are selling for as little as €5,000 (£4,150) in the less salubrious parts of Athens. On the isle of Mykonos, cash-strapped Greek celebrities have been selling luxury villas for a song.

California Legalizes Selling Food Made At Home And Creates Over A Thousand Local BusinessesPeter Muckles Under the California Homemade Food Act, local governments cannot ban cottage food businesses based in private homes. Instead, home-based entrepreneurs can sell their goods after passing a “food processor course” (which can be done online), properly labeling their goods and practicing common-sense sanitation when cooking and baking. Those who want to start their own cottage food business legally need only register or obtain a permit. READ MORE

EUROPE’S 11 MILLION EMPTY HOMES

cimg2403More than 11m homes lie empty across Europe – enough to house all of the continent’s homeless twice over – according to figures collated by the Guardian from across the EU.

In Spain more than 3.4m homes lie vacant, in excess of 2m homes are empty in each of France and Italy, 1.8m in Germany and more than 700,000 in the UK.

There are also a large numbers of vacant homes in Ireland, Greece, Portugal and several other countries, according to information collated by the Guardian.

Many of the homes are in vast holiday resorts built in the feverish housing boom in the run up to the 2007-08 financial crisis – and have never been occupied.

On top of the 11m empty homes – many of which were bought as investments by people who never intended to live in them – hundreds of thousands of half-built homes have been bulldozed in an attempt to shore up the prices of existing properties.
