THE ECONOSPACE CONCEPT

149 EconoSpaceMaking

EconoSpaceMaking describes the process of learning how to design and construct affordable eco-buildings suited to sustainable living.
 EconoSpaceMaking
‘EconoSpace’ is an abbreviation of the words ‘economical space’.  These are small, low-cost buildings which can be constructed free of planning permission.
GarethCiaras June2008 floorwallsroo EconoSpaceMaking
EconoSpace can also be conjoined to create larger buildings.
 EconoSpaceMaking
Designing and building an EconoSpace is the ideal way of relearning lost sheltermaking skills.
GarethCiaras June2008 floorwalls 12 EconoSpaceMaking
We are natural sheltemakers.  Millions of people worldwide still build their own homes.  Knowledge of how to do this is in our genes.  We simply need to tap into this knowing in order to re-engage with the process of sheltermaking.

Here is an example of an EconoSpace constructed as a Site Office to facilitate the construction of the EconoSpace illustrated below.

This EconoSpace consists of a timber frame with a clay-straw infill. It is the first of 3 conjoined units which will make up the sustainable dwelling I am building in Ireland.

This is a small EconoSpace which I am building in Victoria, Australia for less than €5000.

Sustainability begins in your own backyard.  That is the compelling argument put forward on the EconoSpaceMaking DVD, a dynamic combination of text, drawings, photographs and video.
By learning how to create a small sustainable shelter – with no need to first obtain planning permission – you are offered the opportunity to regain territory lost to an economic system which depends on mortgage debt to fuel its insatiable growth.
From drawing to modelmaking, from concept to built reality, EconoSpaceMaking provides you with the means to create your own living architecture and to discover, in the process, who you really are.

3 Responses to “EconoSpaceMaking”

  1. I love that they are not monster structures and are rather simple in design.

  2. Mike Wilson says:

Inspiring! I would love to build a home this way and live mortgage free. I have wanted to build my own home for many years now. I’m not getting any closer to being able to do it, I’m afraid. The UK planning laws seem to be designed to keep the countryside for rich people and a few farmers. I’d love to have enough space to grow most of my own food and perhaps some fuel.

  3. anneke van tholen says:

Fabulous – like coming home – and I’m a retired, ‘out of the the loop’ architect.
Wish I was starting over – this is the way to go!!!
